Car Won’t Start? 7 Common Causes and What to Check

You turn the key or press the start button and... nothing happens — or the engine turns over but won't fire. It's one of the most stressful car problems, especially in a hot car park in the middle of a Sharjah summer. The good news: what the car does when it won't start tells you a lot about the cause. Here are the seven most common reasons we see, and what you can safely check yourself.

First, listen: what does the car do?

  • Nothing at all, no lights — almost always the battery or its connections
  • Rapid clicking — the battery has some charge but not enough to turn the starter
  • A single loud click — often the starter motor or its relay
  • Slow, laboured cranking — a weak battery or poor connection
  • Normal cranking but the engine won't fire — fuel, ignition or immobiliser problem

1. Flat or failing battery

By far the most common cause, and UAE heat makes it more so — heat shortens battery life dramatically. If the dash lights are dim or the car clicks, the battery is the first suspect. A jump start will usually get you going, but have the battery and charging system tested afterwards. See why car batteries die so fast in the UAE.

2. Loose or corroded battery terminals

A good battery can't deliver power through a loose clamp or terminals covered in white or green corrosion. With the engine off, check that the clamps are tight and clean. This is often a free fix.

3. Faulty alternator

If the car started fine yesterday, the battery went flat overnight and a new battery goes flat again within days, the alternator may not be charging it. Warning signs include a battery light on the dash while driving and lights that dim at idle.

4. Starter motor or starter relay failure

A single click with a charged battery, or a starter that sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, usually points to the starter motor, its solenoid or relay.

5. Key, smart key or immobiliser problems

If the engine cranks but won't fire and a key or security light flashes on the dash, the immobiliser may not be recognising the key. Try the spare key. With push-button start, a weak smart-key battery is a common cause — many cars let you start by holding the key right against the start button.

6. Fuel delivery problems

An empty tank (fuel gauges do fail), a failing fuel pump, a clogged filter or a faulty fuel pump relay can all stop fuel reaching the engine. Listen for a short humming from the rear of the car when you switch the ignition on — silence can point to the pump or its circuit.

7. Ignition and sensor faults

On modern engines, a failed crankshaft or camshaft position sensor can stop the engine starting completely, even with a good battery and fuel. These faults need a diagnostic scan to confirm.

What to do next

If a jump start works, drive to a workshop and have the battery and alternator tested before you switch off again for long. If the car cranks normally but won't start, or clicks with a good battery, avoid repeated cranking — it drains the battery and can overheat the starter. Call us and describe exactly what the car is doing; we'll tell you honestly whether it's likely a simple fix. Quick answers

Why does my car click but not start?

Rapid clicking usually means the battery has some charge but not enough to turn the starter motor. A single loud click with a good battery more often points to the starter motor or its relay.

Can heat stop a car from starting?

Yes. UAE heat shortens battery life, and a battery weakened by summer heat can fail suddenly. Heat can also affect some fuel pumps and sensors.

My car cranks but won't start. What should I check?

Check you have fuel, try the spare key, and look for a flashing security light. If none of those help, the cause is often a fuel pump, relay or sensor, which needs diagnosis.
