ADAS Calibration in Sharjah: When Is It Actually Required?

Technician inspecting a car with a work light at the Sharjah workshop

Most cars on Sharjah roads today — even mid-range sedans and SUVs — carry some form of Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS): lane-keep cameras, blind-spot radar, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking. These systems only work correctly if the sensors behind them are aimed with millimetre precision. That aiming process is called ADAS calibration, and it's one of the most skipped steps in UAE workshops — usually because it isn't visible damage, so nobody thinks to check it.

When your car needs ADAS recalibration

Recalibration isn't just for accident repairs. Several routine jobs can shift a sensor's angle just enough to throw the whole system off:

  • Windshield replacement — the forward-facing camera is usually mounted on or near the windshield
  • Bumper repair or replacement — front and rear radar units sit behind the bumper
  • Wheel alignment or suspension work — ride height changes affect camera and radar angles
  • Side mirror replacement — blind-spot cameras are often mirror-mounted
  • Any bodywork after a collision, even minor — see dent & paint repair options
  • Battery disconnection on some models, which resets calibration memory

What happens if you skip it

An uncalibrated ADAS system doesn't usually throw an obvious fault light — that's what makes it risky. The car may still brake automatically or warn you of a lane departure, but the timing or distance reading can be off by enough to matter at highway speed. In practice this shows up as false warnings, late braking assistance, or a lane-keep system that nudges the wheel at the wrong moment.

How proper calibration is done

There are two recognised methods, and a lot of Sharjah garages only offer one:

  • Static calibration — the car is parked in front of a target board at an exact measured distance, and the system is calibrated using a scan tool
  • Dynamic calibration — the vehicle is driven under specific conditions while the scan tool monitors the sensors relearning the road

Some vehicles need one, some need both. What matters is that the workshop actually has the target boards, floor markings, and OEM-level scan tool to do it — not just a generic code reader.

Al Shaml Al Jadeed's approach

Every ABS, airbag, ADAS, radar, mirror and camera job that comes through our Sharjah workshop is re-tested before the car leaves — calibration isn't an upsell, it's treated as part of the repair itself. If you've recently had a windshield changed, bumper repaired, or your car has been in any kind of impact, it's worth a quick diagnostic check even if nothing looks wrong on the surface. See our ADAS calibration service for details, and if a warning light is already on, read our guides to the ABS light and the airbag (SRS) light.
