Airbag (SRS) Light On: Will Your Airbags Still Deploy?

Technician working on dashboard wiring inside a car at the Sharjah workshop

The airbag light — often labelled SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) or shown as a seated figure with a circle in front — does a quick self-check every time you start the car and should go out within a few seconds. If it stays on, the airbag control module has found a fault. On most cars that means the module has disabled some or all of the airbags until the fault is fixed. In a collision, they may not deploy.

What the SRS system includes

It's more than the airbags you can see. The system usually includes front, side and curtain airbags, the seatbelt pretensioners that tighten your belt in a crash, crash and impact sensors around the car, the passenger seat occupancy sensor, and the control module that decides when to fire everything. A fault in any one of these can turn the light on.

Common causes of an airbag light

  • Clock spring failure — the coiled ribbon cable behind the steering wheel that connects the driver's airbag and wheel controls. It wears with steering movement, and a failing one often also stops the horn or steering-wheel buttons working.
  • Seat connectors — wiring under the front seats gets disturbed when seats are moved, cleaned or removed, and a loose connector is a very common cause.
  • Seatbelt buckle or pretensioner faults — the buckle switch tells the system whether a belt is fastened.
  • Passenger occupancy sensor — decides whether the passenger airbag should be active.
  • After an accident — deployed airbags, fired pretensioners and triggered crash sensors must be replaced, and many modules store crash data that has to be cleared or the module replaced.
  • Low battery voltage — a weak battery during cranking can log a voltage fault in the SRS module.

Why a "reset" is not a repair

It's possible to clear an airbag light with a scan tool, and some sellers do exactly that before handing over a used car. But if the underlying fault is still there, the light will return — and in the meantime the airbags may still not work. If you're buying a used car in the UAE and the airbag light doesn't come on at all for its brief start-up check, treat that as a warning sign too: the bulb may have been disconnected to hide a fault.

Safety first when working on airbags

Airbags are explosive devices. Pulling connectors or probing wiring with the battery connected can set off an airbag or permanently damage the module. SRS work should follow the correct power-down procedure and use a proper diagnostic tool — it's not a job for guesswork.

How we handle SRS faults

We read the airbag control module directly with a full diagnostic tool, identify exactly which circuit has the fault, and test the resistance of that circuit — clock spring, connector or sensor — before replacing anything. After the repair, the codes are cleared and the system self-check is confirmed. Airbag diagnostics is part of our ABS & airbag repair service. If your car also has driver-assist cameras or radar and has been in an accident, read when ADAS recalibration is required.

Quick answers

Is it safe to drive with the airbag light on?

The car will drive normally, but the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners may not work in a crash. Get it diagnosed as soon as possible and make sure everyone wears a seatbelt in the meantime.

Why did my airbag light come on after seat or interior work?

Airbag and seatbelt connectors sit under the front seats. Moving, cleaning or removing a seat can loosen a connector, which the system logs as a fault.

Does the airbag light always mean the airbags are off?

Not always all of them — it depends on the fault and the car — but you should assume the system is not fully protecting you until the fault is fixed.
